Jeuveau

Say Hello to Jeuveau (AKA the #NEWTOX) and Say Goodbye to Lines and Wrinkles!

Amoderm is pleased to offer Jeuveau™, the latest member of the family of neuromodulator medications used to reduce lines and wrinkle by relaxing muscles. This family is best known by its oldest member, Botox, which remains among the most commonly used cosmetic medical treatments, but it has been growing by addition of new members, Dysport, Xeomin and now Jeuveau.

Newtox

While developed and manufactured by different companies and bearing certain differences, all these medications are derived from the same core – the naturally-occurring botulinum toxin which is made by a bacterium and blocks the conduction of nerve pulses to the muscles. The effect is relaxation and reduced contraction of the target muscles. The controlled relaxing effect on muscles can be used clinically to achieve many results:

  • Reducing and removing the appearance of lines and wrinkles that are caused by muscle contraction such as the frown lines, the so-called 11s and crow’s feet, glabellar lines, the so-called smokers’ line (lines perpendicular to lips that are caused by the puckering of the lips, and other dynamic lines and wrinkles.
  • Fine adjustment of facial features such as lifting the corners of mouth and correction of the dimpled chin and gummy smile.
  • Reducing the bulk of muscles where desired, such as for jaw slimming and to reduce the appearance of “square jaw” or for calf slimming. Just as exercising muscles will increase its bulk, relaxing it will gradually lead to reduced bulk and this effect can be used to slim down the jaws and create a more v-shaped face or slim down bulky muscles in the back of legs and achieve slimmer calves.
  • Treatment of migraine headaches.
  • Reducing the stimulation of sweat glands in patients who sweat a lot and to treat hyperhidrosis.

What Is The Difference Between Jeuveau, Botox, Dysport and Xeomin?

Jeuveau (prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs) is a new FDA-approved medication that is injected using fine needles into the muscles by your clinician in carefully selected areas to reduce the tone and contraction of muscles in a controlled and temporary manner. While the initial FDA approved indication of Jeuveau has been for the treatment of lines and wrinkles in the glabella (the facial area between the eyebrows and above the nose), similar to other medications in this group (Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin) your physician can generally use Jeuveau for other areas and other conditions that are generally treated with Botox, Dysport or Xeomin an off-label basis. While having some differences, from a clinical and aesthetic point of view, these medications are pretty much comparable and work quite similarly.

What Makes Jeuveau Special?

While generally comparable and in the same family as Botox, Dysport and Xeomin, here are some key characteristics that make Jeuveau more special:

  • Jeuveau is the newest member of the family and first to come to market in nearly ten years.
  • Jeuveau has been specifically and exclusively developed for medical aesthetic use.
  • Being the latest member of the family means that Jeuveau has been developed using the latest and most advanced technologies namely the Hi-Pure™ technology.
  • The safety and efficacy of Jeuveau has been established using extensive clinical studies involving over 2100 patients. Studies include head-to-head comparisons with Botox and long-term safety studies.

What Is the Jeuveau Treatment Like?

Similar to Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport, injection of Jeuveau is performed using fine sterile needles. The pain and discomfort are mild and minimal and in most patients, additional numbing of skin is not needed. During the visit, Dr. Jafari first performs an exam to determine the needed dose of the medication, and then she proceeds with doing the injections at carefully selected areas to achieve the best results. Following the treatment some redness and swelling are possible burs for most patients, it is very minimal. Given the fine size of the needle and areas of injection, bruising is less common but it might still happen. The muscle-relaxing effects of the medication might start to appear quickly within hours, but in many cases, it might take a few days to appear. Also, during the first few days as muscles are adjusting to the new tone, the results are not final and the patients are advised to allow about two weeks from the time of injections for the results to fully settle in.

Are There Any Side Effects for Jeuveau?

While extensive clinical studies have shown the overall safety of Jeuveau (as well as this family of medications that include Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin), like all other medical treatments some side effects are possible. Side effects are generally mild and resolve on their own and the most common side effects include headache, eyelid drooping, upper respiratory tract infection and increased white blood cell count. No serious drug-related side effects have been observed in the studies. Please see the important Jeuveau Safety Information.
